While traveling, we often find ourselves focused on the present. This is a good thing. Then, something helps us appreciate the history, the roots of where we happen to be. This too, is useful because it provides perspective.

Likir Buddhist Monastery in Ladakh, at almost 1,000 years old, is one of those places.

For much of our visit to Likir Monastery we were alone, save a sole monk who tidied up and made sure visitors took their shoes off before entering the temples. We enjoyed it all in peace and found ourselves stepping back, literally and figuratively, just trying to imagine how monks had gathered in those spaces for centuries — chanting, meditating, praying.

When you enter Heniyokutu Cave at Daisho-in Buddhist temple, pause for a moment. As your eyes adjust to the darkness, details begin to appear — prayer offerings and written wishes tied to the base of Buddhist statues, Japanese characters tracing the bottom of the lights, faint smiles on many of the icons. In the dim light, there’s a feeling of peacefulness amidst it all.

If you visit the island of Miyajima near the city of Hiroshima, be sure to carve out several hours to spend at Daisho-in Buddhist temple. Its grounds are covered in Buddhist statues of all shapes, sizes and decor. They’re not only a photographer’s dream, but they also tell the story of the diversity of symbols in Japan’s versions of Buddhism.

Be sure to hang around long enough, as it will increase the likelihood that you’ll catch a ceremony or two along the way.

Since our visit to Myanmar (Burma) in 2008, a lot has changed. Aung San Suu Kyi has been released from house arrest. The junta government seems to be loosening controls and opening up. Heck, it seems like every week there’s a group of foreign dignitaries visiting Myanmar, something impossible during the time of our visit.

But even with all the dignitary visits and changing moods, we imagine that Shwedagon Pagoda is still the same. Located in the capital city of Yangon (Rangoon), Shwedagon Pagoda is the largest and holiest Buddhist temple complex in Myanmar. At dusk, the sprawling temple grounds attract crowds of people hoping to light candles, burn incense, say prayers or simply enjoy a beautiful sunset.

Have you ever temporarily settled down somewhere only to find out that when it comes time to leave, you are left to squeeze in the nearby sights in your final days?

In our version of this story, we took our motorbike all the way around Koh Samui island last weekend to catch some new sights. Along our way, we found Budai, the Laughing Buddha. Although the nearby Big Buddha often steals the attention of guidebooks, it’s this rather prosperous looking Chinese-style Buddha that caught ours.

We are told that Budai usually represents contentment. So contended is he that even his ears are fat. Now that is a heck of a lot of satisfaction.
