Haputale is a small, sleepy Sri Lankan town - as opposed to a tourist town - in a beautiful hill country setting. It is much quieter and much cheaper to stay in than the tourist hot-spots of Nuwara Eliya or Ella, with a range of locally-run guesthouses, rooms and restaurants. The sleepy train station connects it with Colombo, Kandy and Ella, buses pass through and tuk-tuks can take you to nearby waterfalls or the iconic Lipton's Seat from which the stroll down through tea fields is stunning. There are several Olives restaurants in Haputale - Viewpoint was our favourite both for food and a stunning view. If you want a party then avoid Haputale as you'd be bored.

The trip to Lipton's seat takes about 5 hours round trip but is amazing...much better experience than the tour book suggested. An absolute delight was the opportunity to have tea and excellent snacks while in c the clouds at the peak...for an amazingly low price.
Views from our balcony were spectacular and the food - both dinner and breakfast - was top notch

Haputale is no substitute for Ella it's an extra stop.
Haputale is no substitute for Ella it's an extra stop. Haputale has fabulous views right in town and from your lodge, but there is a draught of travellers hang out cafés, while in Ella, you got to hike for the views, the town is packed with cafés and restaurants that makes you want to stay longer. Lodges in Haputale doesn't seem to put people together for shared transport to Horton plains anymore. Almost nobody is going there. I got a very good deal on transport there, but bailed in the gate and went back, due to extortionate entrance fees that added up to $49 for 1 person! - for a 3h hike!!!! - Lipton seat is well worth it though. Go early in the day before the clouds are covering it. The ride up takes you through beautiful tea plantations as well.

It's a lovely and unique area for trekking and hiking. The weather is wonderful, it's a place where the weather changes 6 times a day. Beautiful.
Bambarakanda Falls, Diyaluma Falls, Upper Diyaluma, Haputale Mountain, Lipton's Seat, and Horton Plains are nearby places. Adhisham's Bungalow is another unique experience to see the wildlife in night.

Easy access to famous Adisham bungalow and numerous walking trails. Good base for excursions to Horton Plains, Lipton's Seat, and impressive waterfalls. Haputale station is on scenic railway line through Hill Country. Best to stay in a guesthouse in the surrounding countryside rather than in town centre.
The service was one of the best we’ve ever experienced. Everyone was extremely attentive and took the utmost care of us.
The food is another big topic: it was exceptionally good, so I would highly recommend having lunch and dinner, even when it’s not included in the fare.
Lastly, the location and the view were simply stunning. From the hotel itself you can explore the tea plantations without any other tourists (unlike in other tourist hotspots). Moreover, some of the hotel employees may join you on hike and show you some nice trails.
Things I liked:
- Incredible view
- Great wifi
- Incredible interior
- Incredible food (and affordable)
- amazing staff
As a foreign traveler this stay was incredible. The wifi was strong enough for me to hold a couple video calls and the food was chicken kottu was delicious. Chathura was extremely helpful with giving advice for activities to do nearby and he even got me a box of tea as a gift before leaving.
This seems to be a newer hotel in the area and I expect in years to come it will become a very popular stay
Excellent location very close to the bus station. It's on the edge of the hill and has very good views. The Guest house is run by a really sweet and friendly couple. Good English is spoken. Nice outdoor sitting area on both floors. I had the cheapest room which was clean and small but cozy and had a private bathroom. There is a variety of rooms, some even with private furnished balconies with an excellent view. There's a restaurant downstairs, and oh yeah, the lady can cook. Excellent food. Cold beers available too
Nice, spacious and clean rooms with a very nice view and great balcony (we spent so much time there). Hot water was a plus too. The owners were really helpful, they gave us some advice and helped us with whatever we needed. We recommend the laundry service as well. Location is quite good, 15 min walk from the Haputale however there is not much to do in the city, and there is a good restaurant nearby. Good location to visit Lipton’s Seat, Horton’s Plains and Diyaluma Waterfall:)
My favorite hotel in Sri Lanka!
Our room was spacious and clean. All rooms, including the dining room, have this extraordinary view.
Breakfast was nice (fresh fruits, different sweets and Sri Lankan dishes served). Diner was delicious! It was a variety of curries, vegetables and rice.
The Hotel is in walking distance to town and train station (about 20min). A perfect base for every kind of hiking trip in that beautiful area!
We were impressed by the hospitality of the hotel staff. We always felt their kindness and warm heart.
The view from the hotel was beautiful and special beyond words.
As for dinner, there was a wide variety of Sri Lankan cuisine as well as international dishes, all of which were delicious. For breakfast, the food was beautifully presented and of course tasted delicious. I am attaching photos of our breakfast choices.
Very attentive host, delicious food and good location for exploring Haputale and surrounding area. Our host was very knowledgeable about the area and suggested walks and excursions. His assistant also shuttled us around the area in his Tuk Tuk for a reasonable charge which made life easy! Views of sunset (when the mist isn’t blanketing the valley) are spectacular
Very bad customer service with online booking. Actually we had a booked the three family room on that day and got confirmation email from you. When we came to Haputale Rest they told us. No more room available. We tried called you but nobody response the call.. really disappointed with our all family. We need to complain about this insident to your management.
This is the best place to stay in Haputale because it is located in the middle of the city and very easy to reach. It is a nice and very clean place and its rooms have a great view. They have delicious foods and friendly service.recommend for couples.love that place 🖤 and the best thing is thire reasonable prices very pocket friendly
The best part of this hotel is definitely the view! The room was big and comfy. The staff is very attentive, helpful and kind. The location may look a bit funny at first, but it's not far from the train station and the staff is very helpful with ordering tuktuks. They also organized us a tuktuk for Lipton's Seat.
The rooms were very clean and comfortable with an amazing view and the staff was kind and friendly.they went over and beyond to help make our stay enjoyable.i highly recommended this hotel for any one visiting haputale!!!😍😍
Place was so good and i recommend 100%. Friendly staff and the place is just mind blowing. Rooms are so clean and staff treated us so well. Food was also so good and delicious . Hope to visit again without any hesitation.
Great hotel, very comfy and clean room, the staff were really friendly and helpful, amazing views from the balcony and rooftop, and it was very reasonably priced - definitely recommend to stay here if you are in Haputale.
The room and the entire property were very clean and the owner and her family were very friendly.
The wifi was very good and I do not think the view from our room was the best we had so far in Haputale.
The staff is very friendly, and the overall experience was worth the money spent. The cost-effectiveness of this hotel makes it a reasonable choice, balancing affordability with the services provided.
Every thing is perfect. Clean and specious rooms. Location was perfect, near to haputale town. For relax is good seat on the balcony. Freindly staff and owner. Highly recommended.
Small family owned business with local hospitality. Great view of the Fox Trot hill and valleys of Haputale ; great view of distant hillsides and ranges.
